Here are the basic steps that take place when opening a claim with your insurance:
1. Review Your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy

-
Check Coverage: Ensure your insurance policy covers storm damage. Some policies may have exclusions or limitations, such as for specific types of storms (e.g., hail or wind) or damage caused by neglect.
-
Understand Deductibles: Be aware of your deductible amount and how it affects the overall payout.
2. Document the Damage

-
Safety First: Before assessing the damage, make sure it’s safe to do so. If the storm has passed but there are still dangers (e.g., downed power lines, broken branches), wait for emergency services to clear the area.
-
Take Photos and Videos: Capture clear, detailed images of all visible damage to your roof, including shingles, flashing, gutters, and any other affected areas. If possible, take videos to provide a more thorough visual record.
-
Note the Date of the Storm: This helps establish the cause of the damage.
3. Mitigate Further Damage

-
Temporary Repairs: If your roof is leaking or otherwise exposed to the elements, take steps to prevent additional damage. Use a tarp or plastic sheeting to cover holes. Secure it properly, and take pictures of the temporary repairs.
-
Keep Receipts: If you purchase materials or hire someone to assist with temporary repairs, keep all receipts. Some insurers may reimburse these costs.
4. Contact Your Insurance Company

-
Call Your Insurer: Notify your insurance company as soon as possible after the storm. Some insurers may have specific time limits for filing claims related to storm damage.
-
Provide Information: Be ready to provide your policy number, the date and nature of the storm, and details of the damage you’ve observed. Mention any temporary repairs you've made to prevent further damage.
-
File a Formal Claim: Follow your insurer’s procedures for submitting a claim. This could involve submitting a claim form online, over the phone, or through an insurance app.
5. Schedule an Adjuster Inspection

-
The insurance company will likely send a claims adjuster to inspect the damage. This person will assess the extent of the damage and determine how much your insurance will cover. Make sure to provide appointment information (Date and time) to your roofing consultant. Call our office to schedule: (704) 299-2449.
-
Be sure to attend the inspection and it is imperative to have your roofing consultant with you during this appointment to walk the adjuster through the damage and provide any supporting documentation (photos, previous repair records, etc.).
6. Review the Settlement Offer

-
After the adjuster completes their evaluation, the insurance company will send you a settlement offer. Share the settlement offer with your consultant. We will review the offer carefully to ensure it accurately covers the cost of repairs or replacement.
-
If you're not satisfied with the offer, you have the right to dispute it or negotiate. We can provide additional documentation, contractor estimates, and have the adjuster review the report.
